Thomas Edward Ryan, M.D.
Dr. Ryan is a native St. Louisan. His academic achievements in high school permitted his entry into the Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwest University, an intensive, accelerated program. He earned his MD at the age of 23 from Northwestern University. He remained in the Northwestern system for his internal medicine training, and served as Associate Chief Resident at Evanston Hospital before his two year oncology fellowship in the Northwestern system. He returned to St. Louis after his training to work with Dr. William Emerson, and has been with Midwest Hematology Oncology Consultants, Inc. continuously since then. He was first eligible to sit for the medical oncology boards in 1981 and scored in the top 1% of the candidates that year.

He was a charter member of the St. Louis Community Clinical Oncology Program, which has served to bring cancer research into community oncology practices. Through this organization, he has been continuously affiliated with the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast Program, and the Southwestern Oncology Group.

Dr. Ryan started seeing oncology patients in Alton in 1985 at the request of one of the local hospitals, and under his supervision, that arm of the practice rapidly grew to a two physician practice that has made it possible for Alton residents to receive excellent cancer care on a local basis with access to national trials of clinical cancer research.

Dr. Ryan has mentored medical students from Washington University over the last several years, and was awarded the Chairman's Award of Excellence from the board of Alton Memorial Hospital in 2005 in recognition of its efforts on behalf of the Alton community.

Dr. Ryan is married with three grown children. In his occasional spare hours he can be seen pedaling his bicycle all over the greater metropolitan area. He has participated in the MS 150, a two day, 150-200 mile bicycle ride to raise money for multiple sclerosis for the last 8 consecutive years.
